What is real?

I suppose it’s harmless enough for a yearning to be so strong that what you need becomes very real in some corner of your heart. Picasso said: “Everything you can imagine is real.”

And I understand that.

In a sense we make up all our relatives, though. Fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and the rest. Especially if they are dead or distant. We take what we know, which isn’t ever the whole story, and we add it to what we wish and need, and stitch it together into some kind of family quilt to wrap up in on our mental couch.

We even make ourselves up, fusing what we are with what we wish into what we must become. I’m not sure why it must be so, but it is.

It helps to know this.

Robert Fulghum, 1988

Why Sonoma Parenting 101?

During the past three decades I have observed many changes in families. I have witnessed their struggles and how they wrestled with values and priorities. Parenting takes strength and a lot of it! We all need courage, clarity and sticking to our decisions once we make them.

A few years back I detected a very subtle hum amongst groups of children: They never quite made it to the top their parents list of attention. They were constantly competing with numerous electronic devices and endless desires for adult fun and entertainment. They were fighting an uphill battle.

The truth is, once we are parents, we are parents for life.

In our classroom we have a rule: Care – Share – Help – Listen! Those are the fundamentals of friendship. In my small way I like to help, care, share and listen to our parents. I like to assist them in finding courage, clarity and persistence. May we all support each other in our quest for strong parenting.
